 Tear-soaked Whiskey Memories Blown Away, {Apollo & Adora}
 Posted on: Jan 27 2014, 01:10 PM
Seeing Apollo like this was harder than Adora had ever thought it would be, he looked so small, so child-like - tears were rolling down his cheeks and he was staring intently at the newly revealed mark on his arm. His begging was bad enough and Adora couldn't help but flinch, hating the idea that it was she that was causing him this pain, however she knew she had to stand her ground - what she was doing was right and what she was telling him was her truth. She didn't want him falling into a pit of fear and avoidance of the thing that had already consumed so much of their life together. She wouldn't let that happen and she didn't. Adora looked at him nervously, biting her lip, "Apollo, you have to accept its there, you have to look at it and understand its a part of you. Please, its only going to get worse if you don't." She reached forward tentatively and tried to pull his hand off the mark so he could see it. She felt him tense so she made no move to try and force him to remove his hand but a moment late he threaded his fingers with hers and gently placed her hand back on her lap. She sighed, wishing he would let her help him but at least that meant that his hand was away from it.

Adora watched Apollo's eyes, waiting for him to look down at it and start the process of recovering from everything they'd been through. However, he was looking anywhere but there and before she could say anything he ordered her to clean it up. Adora looked up at him sharply, her eyebrows raising and her sympathetic face fading into annoyance; she moved away from him, standing up and backing away, "No, Apollo, I won't clean it up. And neither will you. You. Have. To. Accept. It." She spoke slowly, "I'm trying to get you to understand, Apollo." She received a glare but nothing else before Apollo looked away and Adora rolled her eyes in frustration - she just had to go and pick the most stubborn son of a bitch she could find to fall in love with didn't she. It made her mad beyond belief but at the same time she knew she wouldn't have it any other way. She and Apollo could scream and shout at each other until they were blue in the face and dishes and mirrors smashed; papers torn and shredded and holes in the wall were all around them, but through it all they always pulled through because they were best friends and neither was willing to lose the other no matter how much they disagreed.

They stayed like that for a very long time, Adora simply standing with her arms crossed, glaring at Apollo while he looked at the wall and ignored her completely. Eventually Adora slumped down on the floor a little way away from him with her back against the bed, still glaring at him but figuring they were going to be here for a long time so she might as well make herself comfortable. The minutes slipped by but Adora didn't budge she knew that Apollo wasn't going to and she wasn't leaving him until she knew they had this whole mess sorted out. She knew after an hour had passed that soon she was going to have to make the first move otherwise they would spend the whole day and night sitting here like this. However, to her surprise before she had a chance to do anything Apollo shifted from his position. Adora's eyes followed him as he moved towards her and touched her cheek gently. She closed her eyes and leaned her head into his hand, knowing this was his apology. Adora opened her eyes and looked up at him as he started to speak again, she nodded at his first words, "I know." Apollo then turned his arm upwards so they could both see the disfigured mark, she let him continue without interrupting, watching his finger drift over the mark rather than looking up into his eyes. The mark really was grotesque and she understood how someone could be so afraid of it - it truly was a terrifying thing, along with everything it stood for, and then of course the fact that it was almost completely disfigured didn't help matters in the slightest.

She listened to what he was saying and shook her head slightly as he asked her if she knew the one thing that kept him going. Of course, she did have an idea - simply because she was exactly the same. Even though they fought and he drove her crazy, Apollo was the only person who could pull her through, make her feel better and leave her with hope in her heart. She smiled at his words before dropping her eyes to watch him place her hand palm down on top of his mark, she could feel the scarred skin beneath her fingertips and she fought the urge to stroke it, to sooth it, instead wanting to wait and see what Apollo wanted her to do. Adora listened carefully, smiling at his words and thankful that he was starting to see how important it was for him to get through this if they wanted to survive – they both had to move on and this was how it started. She did however, think it was a good idea of his that she try to make it a little less grotesque – that she accepted so she nodded in agreement just as Apollo leant in and kissed her gently.

Adora savoured the moment, having missed the feeling of his lips against hers. As he pulled away and asked if she would try and heal the scared tissue Adora nodded, “I’ll do my best, you don’t have to go through this alone, Apollo, I was never suggesting that – you will always have me here beside you no matter what and we can get through this together, I promise.” She moved her hand from over the dark mark and inspected it closely, “I think I should be able to do something, try and make it look less recognisable and get rid of some of the scarring around it.” She looked up at him, smiling softly, before adding, “But it’s going to hurt, this kind of magic is only used for open wounds and severed limb and such and I’m going to have to burn away some of the skin to decrease the scarring that’s already there.” She bit her lip, pondering this thought, “But it should be okay, I’ll give you something to bite down on but you have to promise me you won’t move while I’m doing it – I don’t have the type of medicine that can dull the pain but you can’t move or I’ll make it worse, okay?” Adora stretched out Apollo’s arm a little more, looking at the wound and the mark closer and running her thumb over them, “Okay let’s do this.” She made her decision – Adora knew she could do this and anything done to the mark at the moment would be an improvement so she had to try. She stood up and left the room, hurrying up the stairs and into the kitchen, where she grabbed a dish cloth and the sterilising equipment she had been using to clean his scars for the past weeks.

Adora returned to Apollo’s bedroom and knelt down beside him, handing him the dish cloth, “Put that in your mouth when I start and bite down whenever you feel pain.” She set to work cleaning the area around the scars and over the mark itself, until she was sure that it was all clean and prepared for what she was about to do. Adora picked up her wand and looked up at Apollo, nodding towards the dish cloth, “You might want to use that now and you might not want to look either.” She looked back down at his arm, holding his wrist tight in her other hand as she brought the tip of her want to his skin, the tip of her wand suddenly burned with a blindingly white light and Adora took a breath before pressing it into Apollo’s skin. The heat from the tip of her wand was just enough to remove the finest layer of skin, so as not to draw blood or leave open raw skin, but enough to soften the most obvious scar tissue and fade it slightly so it was less noticeable. Adora felt Apollo jerk but she didn’t look up as she snapped at him, “Don’t move.” She tracked her wand tip up and down Apollo’s scars, avoiding the mark as much as she could for now and simply softening the scar tissue.

Once she was satisfied, Adora set her wand directly onto the mark and began to do the same – her plan was to fade the mark as much as she could around the edges at least so that it wasn’t as recognisable. Apollo was shifting and Adora gripped hold of his wrist harder, reminding him not to move. However, in that split second, her wand tip directly on the dark mark, the dark black ink moved. Adora’s eyes widened but before she could do or say anything the ink on Apollo’s arm seemed to thrash suddenly and a shock of what Adora could only describe as electricity forced its way up her wand and into her hand. As it burned her hand Adora yelped in pain and dropped her wand, letting go of Apollo’s wrist and holding her palm against her chest wincing. Her wand clattered to the stone floor and rolled away and Adora looked up at Apollo, her eyes wide and shocked, “It-it moved. I didn’t realise the dark magic that created it would be that strong.” In hindsight the two of them probably should have realised that the dark mark was not going to be removed or disfigured with magic – of course not otherwise all those dark wizards that had renounced the dark lord would have removed them long ago. Adora rubbed the inside of her palm where she had been burnt and looked up at Apollo, “I don’t know what to suggest.” She looked down at his arm – the scar tissue had softened and was less noticeable but the disfigured mark was still dark against his skin. Still completely present between them.

Apollo face was slightly blank as Adora spoke. He was thrilled to hear that she never expected him to get through this on his own. Because he knew all too well that he could not. There was no way in hell he could, he’d end up killing himself trying to get rid of the damned thing. She moved her hand from over the dark mark and inspected it closely, he watched her hand but did not look directly at the mark itself. “I think I should be able to do something, try and make it look less recognizable and get rid of some of the scarring around it.” She looked up at him, smiling softly, before adding, “But it’s going to hurt, this kind of magic is only used for open wounds and severed limb and such and I’m going to have to burn away some of the skin to decrease the scarring that’s already there.” She bit her lip, pondering this thought, “But it should be okay, I’ll give you something to bite down on but you have to promise me you won’t move while I’m doing it – I don’t have the type of medicine that can dull the pain but you can’t move or I’ll make it worse, okay?” Adora stretched out Apollo’s arm a little more, looking at the wound and the mark closer and running her thumb over them, he pulled his legs up crossing the indian style and inhaled deeply preparing himself, as he closed his eyes bracing for whatever she was going to do. If this was going to hurt he wanted to be ready for it. “Okay let’s do this.” He felt her leave his side and opened his eyes. What the hell? His eye brows raised in curiosity as he saw her leave the room and head up the stairs, he said nothing though and waited semi patiently.

Adora returned to Apollo’s bedroom and knelt down beside him, handing him the dish cloth, he noticed the sterilizing equipment she had been using to clean his scars for the past weeks and frowned. What on earth was she going to do? “Put that in your mouth when I start and bite down whenever you feel pain.” He did as she said without a work, curiosity clear on his face as he watched her work. She set to work cleaning the area around the scars and over the mark itself. Adora picked up her wand and looked up at Apollo, nodding towards the dish cloth, “You might want to use that now and you might not want to look either.” He did as he was told quickly and braced himself. She looked back down at his arm, holding his wrist tight in her other hand as she brought the tip of her want to his skin, the tip of her wand suddenly burned with a blindingly white light and Adora took a breath before pressing it into Apollo’s skin. The heat from the tip of her wand was just enough to remove the finest layer of skin, so as not to draw blood or leave open raw skin, but enough to soften the most obvious scar tissue and fade it slightly so it was less noticeable. He jumped at the sudden burning pain on his forearm, jerking his arm slightly. She instantly snapped at him, “Don’t move.” She tracked her wand tip up and down Apollo’s scars, avoiding the mark as much as she could for now and simply softening the scar tissue. Each touch hurt like hell but he stayed as still as he could. He closed his eyes tightly, hoping maybe not being able to see what she was doing would help with the pain tolerance, it didn’t.

Once she was satisfied, Adora set her wand directly onto the mark and began to do the same as she had around the mark. He shifted anxiously, fully expecting the pain to be much worse on the mark itself than it had been on the outside areas. Adora gripped hold of his wrist harder, reminding him not to move. He stopped but tensed as her wand tip passed directly on the dark mark, a searing pain shot through him making his gasp. It was almost as if an electrical shock shot through his arm. His eyes flew open in alarm as Adora yelped in pain and dropped her wand, letting go of Apollo’s wrist and holding her palm against her chest wincing. Her wand clattered to the stone floor and rolled away and Adora looked up at Apollo, her eyes wide and shocked, “It-it moved. I didn’t realize the dark magic that created it would be that strong.” In hindsight the two of them probably should have realized that the dark mark was not going to be removed or disfigured with magic – of course not otherwise all those dark wizards that had renounced the dark lord would have removed them long ago. Adora rubbed the inside of her palm where she had been burnt and looked up at Apollo, “I don’t know what to suggest.” She looked down at his arm – the scar tissue had softened and was less noticeable but the disfigured mark was still dark against his skin. Still completely present between them.

Apollo glanced down at his arm for a second then looked back up at Adora, he reached over ignoring the pain that was still coursing through his arm and took her wrist in his turning her palm up so that he could see the burn. “Oh no…” He breathed, “Baby I’m sorry.” He kissed her palm gently. “You don’t have to mess with it anymore, especially if it is going to harm you. I never wanted that. I am so sorry.” He kissed her palm several more times before pulling her to him and wrapping his arms around her tightly. “Are you alright?” This was an unusual amount of sympathy for him but he didn’t care he caused her pain because he selfishly couldn’t face hi past and deal with the ugly mark himself. She was hurt and it was all his fault. “I’m so sorry Adora.” He hugged her tightly repeating his apology over and over again.

Instead of looking down at her own burnt palm or at Apollo's arm Adora's eyes were focussed on his face, trying to gage his reaction - she didn't know whether he would be disappointed or angry or try something like the other day in the bathroom. She was still as the tension built inside her, waiting for Apollo to say something or do something. Her palm was throbbing painfully and eventually it was too indignant to ignore any longer and she winced, looking down at it and inspecting the damage. To Adora's relief it looked simply like an average burn, nothing magical or dark about it, which she was thankful for, considering how much worse it could have been if it had been cursed in some way. Before she could have a good inspection of the wound however, Apollo had reached out and taken her wrist in his hand, pulling her over so he could look at it himself. Adora shook her head at his apologise - it wasn't his fault, they had agreed to do it together and he must have been hurting too. Still, she winced slightly as he kissed it and accepted his embrace gratefully as Apollo pulled her to him and wrapped his arms around her.

This wasn't his normal way and they both knew it but despite her quiet surprise Adora was thankful for it. She rested her head against Apollo's chest and cuddled up closely to him, taking comfort from his soft words and the warmth from his body. She stayed silent for a few minutes before speaking softly, shushing him gently, "Apollo, I'm alright, it’s okay - we should have known that something like that would happen, it’s not your fault." She reached up to kiss his cheek and stroke it softly, "I'm just sorry I couldn't help." They stayed silent for a few more minutes, just taking comfort from the closeness of the other, Adora gently stroking Apollo's hair with his arms tightly around her. "I love you." Adora spoke softly, enjoying the peace between them after all their arguing but also feeling the need to tell Apollo how much she cared for him, especially after all their arguing. It felt like, in that moment, that nothing could harm them, that they were lost in their own world, protected by each other.

That feeling couldn't have been more inaccurate, however, and just as Adora could feel the tensions from the past few days leaving her and she relaxed against Apollo fully, there was a deafening bang from the front of the house. Adora screamed in shock and fear as the ceiling shook and a thin layer of dust was showered around them. They both leapt up and for a moment the silence returned but this time it was filled with terror and tension. A second passed and Adora looked at Apollo and began to whisper, "W-what was tha--" Before she could finish a deep voice boomed from upstairs, "AVERY!" There was a mixture of other voices but the deep one sounded again straight away, "Avery! We know you are in here! You have played a neat little game of hide and seek but we've found you now - you gave it away so easily." There was a string of laughs before Adora heard the man give an instruction to the others to spread out and search the house. Adora's eyes were wide with fear as she looked back up at Apollo and spoke, barely a whisper, "Death Eaters... y-you told them w-where we were?" Her expression was a mixture of terror, confusion, shock and betrayal - from what the man had shouted it sounded as if Apollo had told the death eaters exactly where to find them, after all how else would they have known, this was a secret house, barely noticeable from the outside, especially to someone not looking for it. The sound of maybe eight or nine boots were perfectly audible from the floor above them and Adora felt tears began to spring from her eyes and roll down her cheeks, "They'll kill me, Apollo." She didn't understand what he would have achieved by telling the death eaters anything - perhaps he had been trying to buy his freedom from them, but with what? Gold? There was plenty of it in this house after all.

"There's a door here." A different male voice called out from the top of the staircase that led down to the room Adora and Apollo were still frozen in. The sound of breaking glass and the thud of objects being thrown from shelves ceased for a moment, "Are they down there?" A Scottish accent. The man at the top of the stairs - "I don't know." And once again, the booming voice, "Don't go down, if they are down there you'll be at the disadvantage. Trust me I know this house well. Here take this." Adora bent down and grabbed her wand from the floor before backing away from Apollo and the door, looking around terrified. There was suddenly the sound of a bottle smashing at the bottom of the staircase and in an instance the room that Apollo and Adora were standing in began to fill with thick black smoke, like a fog that was impenetrable. Adora backed up against the wall but before she or Apollo could do much more the room was filled and it was impossible to see anything even two inches in front of their faces.

Adora tried to stay quiet as she heard footsteps descend the stairs, one, two, three... countless pairs of boots coming. "We know you're here." One spoke out and there was suddenly a flash of green light that shot through the fog, turning everything in Adora's vision green as well - a curse fired, a dark curse." She screamed despite herself and instantly began to move, away from the sounds of the men and the curses and Apollo, towards what she hoped was the bathroom door but the smoke made it impossible to navigate. "Well hello there. I knew they were here." The sounds of the men started to make their way into the room, they spoke in unison and as many as ten spells were shot into the room, lighting up the smoke once more. Adora managed to dodge two that were shot in her direction and began to run towards the direction they came from, hoping to get past the death eaters and up the stairs without them noticing. There was shouting and she was sure she could hear Apollo's voice but was too panicked to take any notice of what he was saying.

Before she made it a few steps, however, Adora ran straight into a hard body, she screamed as she felt a hand grab at her arm and wrap around her wrist. "Got the girl." The voice apparently attached the arm spoke, but it was just enough for Adora to raise her wand and yell a knock-back jinx in his direction. There was a yell of pain and a crash but she was free and Adora ran in the general direction of the door. She hit the stone wall hard and hurried to feel along it for the door. Finally she found it and ran up the stairs that she found to be clear of smoke. Just as she reached the top however, Adora heard a voice from below and before she could react a spell hit her squarely in the back and she was thrown against the opposite wall before falling to the floor in a heap, groaning. She looked up at a man standing above her, sneering as he spoke, "Do you think your boyfriend will give up the fight if he knows we have you?" The man kicked her wand out of her hand and grabbed her elbow, pulling her up and holding her tightly so she could barely move away from him at all let alone try to escape.

Apollo tightened his arms around her as she rested her head against his chest and cuddled up closely to him. She stayed silent for a few minutes before speaking softly, shushing him gently, her words were kind, but that didn’t stop the way he felt, it was his fault. Had he never gotten wrapped up with the dark arts none of this would be happening, she wouldn’t have gotten hurt trying to rid him of the ugly mark. She reached up to kiss his cheek and stroke it softly, the action ripped him from his thoughts and he looked over at her as she spoke again. He smiled softly, “You tried. That’s what matters.” He relaxed against the bed as Adora gently stroked his hair. “I love you too Adora.” This was truer than anything he had ever said to anyone before in his life. She really was everything to him.

Apollo began to drift into a light sleep and woke up abruptly sitting straight up as there was a deafening bang from the front of the house. Adora screamed in shock and fear as the ceiling shook and a thin layer of dust was showered around them. They both leapt up and for a moment the silence returned but this time it was filled with terror and tension. Apollo held a finger to his lips hoping to silence Adora. "AVERY!" Apollo instantly recognized the voice, Fenrir Grayback. HE cringed inwardly, he’d probably come to kill them both. There was a string of laughs, Apollo heard Fenrir give an instruction to the others to spread out and search the house. Adora's eyes were wide with fear as she looked back up at Apollo and spoke, barely a whisper, "Death Eaters... y-you told them w-where we were?" Her expression was a mixture of terror, confusion, shock and betrayal . Apollo was actually very appalled and hurt that she would even think he’d compromise her safety by telling them where they had been hiding. “No. I would never tell any-“ He stopped as the sound of maybe eight or nine boots were perfectly audible from the floor above Apollo’s gaze locked on Adora as her eyes filled with tears and they rolled down her cheeks. He tried to give her a reassuring smile and whispered, “Over my dead body. I’ll protect you until my death.” He kissed her forehead and hugged her tightly, feeling as if this was his last chance to hold her in his arms.

Apollo reached for her but the sudden sound of a bottle smashing at the bottom of the staircase distracted him and he looked away. Instantly the room was filled with smoke and he could no longer see Adora. “Adora?” He whispered, grasping all around him trying to grab any part of her and get her hidden. But he couldn’t find her and calling out to her any louder would give them away.

Apollo could hear them on the stairs now, thundering down them. "We know you're here." One spoke out and there was suddenly a flash of green light that shot through the fog, turning everything in the room green, he ducked barely missing it as it hit the wall behind him. She screamed, Apollo instantly rushed towards her voice hoping to reach her before them, but he ran into the closet door. "Well hello there. I knew they were here." Shit, she had run right into them. Panicked he began feeling his way around the room keeping his hand on the wall. The sounds of the men started to make their way into the room, they spoke in unison and as many as ten spells were shot into the room, lighting up the smoke once more. He called out to her several times but his voice as drowned out by the shouting of curses and spells.

Adora screamed again, immediately after she screamed one of the men spoke, "Got the girl." Apollo yelled, “No! Let her go!” But it was drowned out by Adora’s yelled knock-back jinx. There was a yell of pain and a crash Apollo smiled and whispered, “That’s my girl.” He heard her small foot falls running up the stairs to safety. He sighed with relief, only to instantly realize it was too soon. He heard someone shout a curse and a thud knowing it had been sent towards her. He fumbled his way around the room on his hands and knees searching desperately for his wand. He hoped it was on the floor and not in Adora’s pocket still. He’d be at a terrible disadvantage without his wand and he would never stand a chance at saving her. Just as he found wand he thought might be his wand a little ways under the bed someone grabbed him around the waist jerking him up and slamming him into the wall. “I found Avery.” The person holding him yelled over the commotion. Everything around them stopped, the silence was deafening as one set of foot falls thundered through the smoke over to where he dangled helplessly against the wall. ”Accio wand.” He thought desperately, he couldn’t say it out loud, if he did they would know he was unarmed. The smoke was currently the only thing keeping them from knowing they had the advantage on him. Moments later he felt his wand slip into his fingers. He gripped it tightly for a moment closing his eyes, listening through the silence hoping he would hear some sign that Adora was still alive upstairs. No reassurance came to him, his jaw clenched tightly, and his wand firmly grasped in his hand, he lifted his arm aiming it the chest of the man holding him to the wall, he shouted as loudly and meaningfully as he could, “Arvada Kadavra!” Green light shot from his wand hitting the man squarely in the chest. He crumbled to the floor. Before the flash faded Apollo got a good look through the now thinning smoke at how many were around him, Fenrir was quickly stepping towards him now.

He kept his eye trained on Fenrir as he cast the killing curse several more times, hitting most of the other death eaters, killing them instantly. Many of them seeing they didn’t stand a chance scrambled up the stairs away from Apollo’s reach. Fenrir stopped in front of Apollo and glared at him. Apollo glared back. “Why would you kill your own after summoning us to you? Is that blonde headed healer really worth betraying all of your friends? Didn’t you want to avenge your parents…make them proud of you? You’re doing a fine job of failing them Apollo.” Fenrir’s voice boomed through the silence of the house. Apollo spoke, “She’s worth everything. I’d die for her. That is something you will never understand. Apollo once again raised his wand aiming it at Fenrir and said, “Imperio!” He kept his eyes trained on Fenrir’s as he forced him backwards towards the stairs with the curse, made him march up the stairs. Once in the kitchen, Apollo desperately wanted to look to see if Adora was alive but he knew if he broke concentration for even a moment Fenrir would kill him. He forced Fenrir out the front door of the house and called over his shoulder to the others. “Get the fuck out of my house now, or I will kill every last one of you without hesitation.” All the remaining men scrambled past Apollo and across the yard. He heard the Iron gates creak open signaling their exit. He forced Fenrir through the yard to the gate. He released Fenrir as soon as he was outside the gate and he said, “The war is over Fenrir, the Dark Lord is dead. Let this go. Let me be.” Fenrir smiled menacingly, “This isn’t over Avery. We will meet again.” He turned and headed into the woods.

Apollo stayed standing at the gate until he could no longer see any of the Death Eaters. Finally he moved and cast every protection and shielding spell he knew on the property. He turned on his heels and ran back to the house. He slammed the front door behind him hastily locking it, then stumbled panicked into the kitchen finding Adora sitting on the floor staring at him. He dropped to the floor next to her relieved she was alive. “Oh my god I thought they killed you.” He kept his distance though not sure if she would want him to hug and kiss her like he desperately wanted. He was sure she heard everything he had done. He hung his head in shame, avoiding her eye. He mumbled, “I-I’m s-sorry….I’m a monster…”

Just as Adora was about to attempt to force the man holding her to release her - how exactly she hadn't figured out - her attention was distracted by screams and shouting from below them. The man who had hold of her grunted, obviously listening as closely as she was to the commotion downstairs. For a moment he looked as if he was unsure as to what he should do - release Adora and find out what was going on or keep his hostage for himself. Before there was time for the death eater to make a decision, however, thundering footsteps sounded up the steps and suddenly five or six death eaters came scrambling up from the basement. Adora caught a look of terror on one of their faces and apparently so did the death eater holding her because she felt his grip loosen and his stance shift slightly.

He had obviously made his decision, however, for as soon as one of his fellow death eaters yelled at him to run, the man threw Adora roughly from his grip and raced after the others. Adora stumbled and tripped as the leg she had fallen on earlier gave way beneath her, partly due to fear and partly from pain. She crumpled to the floor just in time to hear more footsteps ascending the steps, slower than the rest. Adora turned and gasped as she saw Apollo with his wand trained on Fenrir, forcing him up the stairs and along the corridor. That was dark magic and Adora felt her stomach twist as she watched Apollo use it with such ease.

What must have happened downstairs finally dawned on her and she felt quite sick to her stomach - there had been at least half a dozen more death eaters down there. Adora shifted herself, trying to get up from where she was slumped against the wall but she winced at the pain from the leg she must have twisted and looked back at Apollo who was forcing Fenrir out of the door. When they were out of sight Adora leant her head back on the wall and felt the first sign of tears sliding down her face as she closed her eyes. Part of her didn't want Apollo to walk back through the door - she was scared and confused and in pain and she didn't know what she could trust from him anymore. All those times he said he would change and yet he could slip so easily back into the darkness, even if it was when fighting his old comrades. Maybe you couldn't change someone who had gotten in that deep, perhaps as long as the dark mark remained on his skin he would always be a part of the evil.

More tears began to streak down Adora's cheek as she heard the door finally open again at the end of the hall. She tried to move again but before she could get anywhere Apollo found her. She couldn't look him in the eyes, she couldn't even face him as he knelt beside her. Adora continued to push herself up and managed to stand with the help of the wall behind her. The weight she put on her hurt leg made her hiss through her teeth but it was bearable, not broken. Adora looked down at Apollo, wiping the tears from her cheeks and managed to speak finally, although her throat felt like sandpaper and it was barely above a whisper. "I don't know what you are. Just-- just leave me alone." Adora started past him, favouring her other leg as the one she had landed awkwardly on twinged with every step, making her curse softly under her breath before she steadied herself and walked out of the kitchen. Adora made her way towards the staircase leading up to the bedrooms in the rest of the house. She slowly and carefully ascended them before pushing the door open of the first room she came to.

Adora had cleaned this bedroom only a few days ago so it was habitable even if the sheets on the bed were ancient and moth-eaten. At that moment in time, however, Adora didn't care. She locked the door behind her and made her way over to the bed, sitting down on the edge of it and staring blankly at the wardrobe opposite her, wondering what she was supposed to do now. Should she leave? Was she in danger here? Had Apollo put her in danger? She hated the thought but couldn't fathom any other explanation for how the death eaters had found them, unless Apollo had somehow contacted them for some unknown reason. Adora could hear Apollo somewhere in the house, making a lot of noise with whatever he was doing but she couldn't bring herself to check on him, she wasn't even sure if he was the same person she had thought he was anymore.

He waited for quite a while as she sat in front of him as he continued to kneel before her. His heart beating rapidly in his chest, he was sure she could hear it. It felt like it was the loudest thing in the silent house. He had no idea what was going to happen next. He felt as if everything he held dear was about to evaporate right in front of him. He had no one to blame but himself, which made it worse. He was without a doubt his own worst enemy. As the minutes ticked by he looked back on the last few years, what had he really accomplished? Nothing to be proud of that was for damn sure. If he was his parents looking down from where ever they were, he’d hate what he saw. He would not feel pride or love for the monster that he was. Apollo pushed his thoughts from his mind and slowly lifted his head up to glance at her face; she was avoiding looking at him. He signed heavily and looked back down at the floor. She hated him, he knew it. How could she not? He’d killed someone again without even a second thought. He knew she could see the monster he always told her that he was. He watched as she pushed herself up and managed to stand with the help of the wall behind her. He could tell her leg was bothering her but he couldn't bring himself to aid her, he could tell she didn't want him to touch her. Adora looked down at Apollo, wiping the tears from her cheeks and managed to speak finally, he searched her eyes, pleading with hers to forgive him, as she spoke her voice was barely above a whisper. "I don't know what you are. Just-- just leave me alone." Adora started past him, he watched wide eyed as she limped across the floor, cursing softly under her breath before she steadied herself and walked out of the kitchen.

Apollo’s heart nearly leapt out of his chest as Adora’s words echoed through his mind, Just leave me alone… he watched helplessly as she limped out of his line of vision. He made no attempt to follow her. He felt absolutely shattered, Adora was his world. The one and only light in his darkness. She was his only reason for staying alive. He couldn’t imagine living a moment without her in his life. In a matter of minutes he had shattered everything, every chance he had at having her by his side. He was a monster, and she finally saw what he had always known. She hated him. He stayed on the floor where he had knelt down next to her; he hung his head in shame, lifting his hands to cover his face. He was suddenly overwhelmed with anger at himself. He couldn't bare the thought of losing her. His fury took over his sadness very quickly.

He stood up and threw his wand across the kitchen not caring to look to see where it landed. He kicked the wall nearest him as hard as he could. The wall gave away where he hit. He turned towards the table flipping it and its chairs over. His rage boiling through him, as he rampaged around the kitchen leaving a wake of destruction all around him. After several long minutes he broke down, dropping to his knees on the floor his hands over his face as tears streamed endlessly down his cheeks, his shoulders shaking from heavy sobs. Through his weakened, and extremely vulnerable state he cried out, “A-Adora,” He paused to try and catch his breath but ended up coughing through a sob, “Adora…my love, please….don’t do this….I-I, I can’t….I’m n-nothing without you…nothing.”

Apollo had no idea if she heard him or not but he forced himself to stand up. He made his way around the kitchen setting things in their rightful places, knowing she would be pissed to see he had destroyed all their hard work over the months cleaning up the place. The kitchen after all was one of the best looking parts of the house at this time. They still had so much work to do. He located his wand behind an over turned book case and stuffed it in his pocket. Once all the furniture was placed in its proper locations he carefully repaired holes and broken objects. As soon as the last item was carefully placed in its place he shuffled into the living room, wiping his face on his sleeve as he dropped into a reclining chair. He pulled his knees to his chest like a small child and continued crying. Nothing he had been through in his life hurt more than this moment right now. Picturing a life without Adora was a nightmare to him. He knew he should go to her, make things right. But he just couldn't bring himself to face her rejection that he knew was coming.

He lifted his arm and stared through blurry vision at his dark mark, it still stood out on his arm despised all the disfigured scars that had formed across it and around it from all his attempts to remove it. There was also the burn scars from Adora attempting herself to make it fade away. He silently traced a finger across the scars and burns. At that moment he silently vowed that if Adora forgave him for today's events that he would put his past behind him, do his best to be a better man for her, give her everything she deserved. He knew his chances of her forgiving her were slim, but there was always hope. He took hold of that hope and clung to it with his life. He stayed seated though, allowing her all the time she needed to take, she'd come to him when she was ready. He knew he couldn't rush her forgiveness. Tears still flowed freely down his cheeks but he ignored them as he continued to trace his scars.

Sitting in the silent bedroom, Adora could hear every sound in the whole house through the damp, paper-thin walls. She jumped slightly when the crashing from the kitchen reached her ears but only closed her eyes and lay back on the dusty covers, listening without further reaction. It didn't surprise her that Apollo was angry, she knew he wasn't angry at her, but at himself. He wasn't a killer anymore. He had worked very hard to put all that behind him and she couldn't imagine what it must have been like to suddenly be forced to relive everything that he had pushed away about himself. That didn't change the fact, however, that it had scared her and something inside her was making her doubt everything she trusted about him. If he could change back so easily, what was stopping him from doing it again? But next time he might turn against her as opposed to protecting her. Was that possible? Adora covered her eyes with her hands as she heard a piece of furniture hit the kitchen floor with quite a bit of force. Tears began to leak out, creating damp tracks down her cheeks. Was she sure that this fear wasn't just left over from the death eaters attack? Maybe it wasn't actually Apollo that was making her feel so torn apart.

No matter how much she hated it, though, Adora knew that there had definitely been something about Apollo in those few minutes that she hadn't recognised at all and it was that which she was so fearful of. It hadn't been the man she loved, the person she had grown to know so well and it made her feel very uncomfortable that there was a side of him that she had not seen before. The sounds from the kitchen had ceased and Adora released a small sigh of relief - it was a lot easier to think when she didn't have the destruction of the house to contend with. She forced herself to sit up again and brushed herself off, despite the circumstances still making a mental note that this would need to be the next room she cleaned. A small voice in the back of her head piped up in response, though, asking her if she would even be here that long. Did she want to leave? Did she want to leave Apollo? Adora pushed her hair back off her face and scowled, picking herself up off the bed and making her way over to a full-length mirror. Her disheveled appearance in the mirror didn't really surprise her - they had just been in a fight to the death after all. A few cuts, bruises and dirty clothes was probably forgivable.

There was as much silence downstairs now as there was in the bedroom, the only sound being the gentle creaking of the house around them. Adora put most of her weight on her hurt leg, testing it. She flinched slightly as pain shot down it from her hip - at least that told her which area was damaged, she must have wrenched the joint. There wasn't really much she could do about it, not at least while everything else was on her mind as well. Adora promised herself that later she would rest it and stay off her feet for a while. Right now though she knew she needed to speak to Apollo. Although she hadn't really decided what she was going to say yet, Adora opened the door of the little room and made her way downstairs. She wasn't entirely sure whereabouts Apollo was, or even if he was still in the house, so she was cautious as she reached the last step and looked along the hallway. Adora didn't want to call out to him so she stayed quiet and made her way into the kitchen. Amazingly, considering how much crashing and banging she had heard, the kitchen was exactly the same as she had left it. Adora glanced around and then moved onto the living room. Here, she did spot Apollo, although his back was to her in the old recliner near the center of the room. She hesitated a moment, just listening to his heavy breathing - the only giveaway for the moment that he had been crying.

What was she going to say? What could she say? Adora still didn't even completely know how she was feeling about the whole ordeal yet. So why was she down here already? The truth was that she hated being away from Apollo as much as he did from her. They had always managed to work things out together before, so surely this time should be no different. Of course this time was completely different, nothing like this had ever happened before. Adora made her first noise since entering the room and sighed, knowing he would already be able to sense her presence. She walked into the room and without a word, carefully lowered herself into place at the foot of the recliner. It was where she always sat when she and Apollo were enjoying an evening together - him in the recliner and her on the floor with her head and back resting against his legs as he stroked her hair. Adora was looking out the window, still not saying a word, but at least now that they had both calmed down a little they could sit here together and recover in silence. She could feel his eyes on the back on her head and knew he was waiting for her to speak but she still didn't know how to say all the thoughts that were flying through her head. Several long, quite minutes went by and Adora continued to stare out of the window. They stayed like that for quite a while and she watched the burly evening gradually turn into night.

Finally, Adora turned herself slightly so that she could look up at him and asked quietly, "What if they are still out there?" It was almost pitch black now and it had only just occurred to her that if the death eaters were still out there she and Apollo would never be able to see them approaching the house. She looked away from him again but without giving him a moment to answer her first question, she asked another. Still quietly, no anger or frustration apparent in her voice but she made sure he knew with her tone that he shouldn't lie to her - this was important. "Did you contact them?" Adora didn't look at him when she asked this time, just looking at the dark picture outside the window. She wasn't really sure what answer she wanted to hear - if he hadn't contacted them then they must have found them another way and that scared her, but if he had brought them here... well, that scared her even more. It was unthinkable but Adora needed to know - his answer would determine whether or not she left tonight.

Apollo heard the floor creak behind him followed by Adora's sigh, he didn't look up or show any sign that he had heard her. For all he knew she was fixing to walk out the front door with all of her belongings and never look back again. He didn't want to turn and see her leave so he stayed froze in place in the recliner he sat in. Her soft foot steps came into the living room, and without a word she carefully lowered herself into place at the foot of the recliner. He didn't look at her, he couldn't bring himself to. He didn't feel he deserved to even look at her. He didn't dare reach out and touch her soft hair like he desperately wanted and needed to. The spot she say in currently was where she always sat when she and Apollo were enjoying an evening together - him in the recliner and her on the floor with her head and back resting against his legs as he stroked her hair. He finally looked at her, unable to keep from doing so any longer, Adora was looking out the window, still not saying a word. He wanted to say something, but he wanted her to speak first. It seemed neither of them even knew what to say to the other. Several long, quite minutes went by and Adora continued to stare out of the window, and he at the back of her head.

Finally, Adora turned herself slightly so that she could look up at him and asked quietly, "What if they are still out there?" Apollo glanced out the window, it was almost pitch black now, he looked back at her, his expression blank as she looked away from him again but without giving him a moment to answer her first question, she asked another. Still quietly, no anger or frustration apparent in her voice but she made sure he knew with her tone that he shouldn't lie to her - this was important. "Did you contact them?" She looked away from him, she looked instead at the dark picture outside the window. Apollo let out a slow breath, before shifting in the chair and putting his legs down on either side of her. He gently grabbed her shoulders, carefully turning her until she was facing him. He slowly lifted one hand from her shoulder and tucked her hair behind her ears. "I didn't call them, not on purpose anyways." He glanced at the mark on his arm, and scowled, "I think we did by mistake." He caressed her cheek, "I'd never summon them. I don't want anything to do with them or the dark arts Adora. You are all I need." He removed his hand from her face and sat back in the chair, folding his arms across his chest.

Her other question bothered him, not because she had asked but because he didn't know how to answer it. He had no idea if they were still out there, waiting beyond the gate for the protection spells to drop so they come come in and attack them again. He didn't know, it made him furious because he wanted nothing more than to wrap her in his arms and tell her that she was safe, that nothing could hurt her. He would protect her. He inhaled and exhaled slowly, locking his gaze with hers. "I don't know if they are still out there Adora, I wish I knew." He could see the fear in her eyes, he quickly grabbed her hand, lifting it to his lips and kissed the back of her hand softly. He lowered their hands to his lap and squeezed her hand gently, "When I ran them out of the house, past the gate, I put up as many protection charms as I could think of. I don't want them to harm you. You are my life Adora. You are safe with me, you know that right?" His voice had lowered to a whisper. He lifted her hand to his lips again, holding it there against his mouth watching her face waiting for her to say something. He knew she had a lot on her mind. He could see it written all over her face.

Apollo remained still, watching her, allowing her all the time she needed to process whatever she was thinking about in her beautiful mind. Every now and then he would kiss her hand or gently move his thumb across the back of her hand. He wasn't a patient man, but for her he would wait an eternity if he had to. He hoped she knew how much she meant to him and that he didn't want a life without her in it. He shuddered at the thought of not waking up to her brilliant smile, or to her sleeping next to him. He kissed her hand again and reached out with his free hand and gently rand his fingers through her hair. She hadn't pulled her hand away so he assumed it was okay to touch her. He kissed her hand once more then gently set it down. He gently ran both his hands through her hair carefully braiding it. He wasn't very good at braiding but he tried, quite often when they'd sit like this. He liked to think he was getting better. But he wouldn't really know for sure unless she told him, she never complained about it though. When he finished it he draped it over her shoulder and said, "Please say something love...I can't help but feel like your contemplating running and never coming back..." He silence was starting to make him think the worst possible things, he crossed his arms over his chest realizing that his hands were shaking. He wondered if she'd noticed when he had been holding her hand, or when he braided her hair. He chewed on his bottom lip and looked out the window into the darkness that surrounded it. He knew it was well past midnight and they should be heading to bed, but he didn't want to think about that, not until he knew that they were okay.

Listening to Apollo insist that he hadn't called the death eaters sent Adora into a silent trance, she knew he was telling the truth but it scared her that they were able to find them so easily, just by the mark on his arm. She stared out of the window, imagining the men waiting just beyond the gates - would they come back? Surely they weren't just going to run away with their tails between their legs. What if they did come back? Maybe this time they would have more people. Adora dreaded to think what would happen to her and Apollo if that eventuality arose. They had barely made it out alive of their last encounter and Adora knew the death eater had no use for her, if they got the chance she would be dead before she could yell for help. That's if they decided just to kill her and nothing worse. She shivered at the idea and was about to wrap her arms around herself when Apollo took her hand and kissed it gently.

Adora smiled at his patience, knowing it must be frustrating for him that she wasn't telling him every thought that was running through her mind. She listened to him explaining about the protection spells and wondered if it would be enough to keep them both safe. What else could they really do though? Her stubborn nature refused to leave this house that they had been working so hard to restore and she suddenly felt a bubble of anger from her gut at these evil men who were forcing them into hiding. Apollo's fingers in her hair calmed her nerves slightly and Adora sighed, relaxing against Apollo and thinking about everything that had just happened. After all the mayhem, Adora really just wanted to sit quietly and think, however although Apollo was quiet for now she knew he wouldn't let her retreat into her own mind for very long.

As she had suspected, a couple of moments later Apollo brought her out of her daze. Adora looked up at him, and offered a small smile before speaking, "I'm fine, I promise - it's just... I don't like not knowing if we are safe or not. I wanted this to be our home, somewhere we can feel safe from the world and now..." She paused and looked away, "I feel like it's been infected by all the evil I thought we were escaping." Adora pushed herself up off the floor and settled herself into Apollo's lap, curling up against him and holding onto the collar of his shirt. "I love you." She was quiet for a moment before murmuring, "Please don't ever betray me."

Only now that she was in a comfortable and warm place did Adora realise exactly how exhausted she was - her whole body ached and she was sure she could feel the bruises from the fight already starting to appear. Adora closed her eyes, snuggling against Apollo's chest, letting her body go limp as she felt a wave of sleep almost overtake her mind. She gripped Apollo's shirt a little tighter before slipping into an uneasy slumber.

When she woke Adora was burrito-ed in a thick feather duvet, the room around her was dimly lit, meaning it was probably still early morning. She rolled over to look for Apollo but to her surprise he was not beside her. Blinking, Adora sat up and looked around the bedroom - no sign of him anywhere and the other half of the bed looked barely slept in. With a frown, Adora slid her legs out from under the duvet and grabbed a short nightie, throwing it on before making her way out of the room to search for Apollo. She padded down the cold corridor, hugging herself for warmth as she quietly called out, "Apollo? Where are you?" There was a soft scratching from the floor above as she reached the kitchen but Adora decided it was probably just rats living somewhere in the walls. The kitchen too was empty, so before continuing through the house Adora moved over to the sink and poured herself a glass of water, sipping it as she looked out of the dusty window. The sun was just coming up over the horizon, casting a reddish tint on everything in the overgrown back garden that she looked out upon. There was no movement and yet somehow Adora still felt on edge, as if she was expecting the worst. Nothing stirred however, the morning was peaceful and gentle songs of birds as the awoke relaxed her somewhat. The events of the previous night hardly seemed real in the early morning hush, but the ache in her legs and back was a painful reminder of what had happened. How could such terror have been present here only a few hours earlier when now it looked so beautiful? Adora wondered once again just how far away the death eaters actually were – could they still be waiting? She didn’t even know if the protection spells had come down yet but for now at least the house seemed safe.

Adora set down her glass and got back to looking for Apollo, wondering where on earth he had got to. She called out for him again but to no avail. Ascending the grand staircase Adora made her way to the first floor, checking the first few rooms before calling out again. Now she could feel the sting of panic creeping into her stomach and it resonated in her voice - his name catching in the back of her throat as she closed the door to the fourth empty room she had checked. Just as she was about to carry on to the second floor Adora heard movement from below. Hurrying back to the staircase she lent over the banister to see, "Apollo, are you there?" More movement but no response. Adora hesitated - if it was Apollo, why wasn't he answering her? She slowly made her way down the stairs, trying to be as quiet as possible. She listened carefully for any more noise but nothing came to her attention.

Apollo smiled softly as Adora looked up at him, her smile small and etched with her worries, "I'm fine, I promise - it's just... I don't like not knowing if we are safe or not. I wanted this to be our home, somewhere we can feel safe from the world and now..." She paused and looked away, "I feel like it's been infected by all the evil I thought we were escaping." Apollo frowned at her words, he felt the same way. But they both loved this house. He knew they wouldn’t be able to find one anywhere like it that they could afford. It had been in his family for years and years. His thoughts were interrupted as Adora pushed herself up off the floor and settled herself into Apollo's lap, curling up against him and holding onto the collar of his shirt. "I love you." She was quiet for a moment before murmuring, "Please don't ever betray me." Adora closed her eyes, snuggling against Apollo's chest, letting her body go limp as she felt a wave of sleep almost overtake her mind. She gripped Apollo's shirt a little tighter before slipping into an uneasy slumber. He tightened his arms protectively around her and whispered as she drifted off to sleep, “I love you, I’ll never betray you my love.” He kissed her forehead and held her in his arms, gently rocking in the chair, in hopes to allow her uneasy sleep to be peaceful.

He woke suddenly, not even knowing he had drifted. Adora was still cradled against him. He smiled and brushed her hair from her face, planting a light kiss on her forehead. Apollo stood carefully, keeping her against his chest. He slowly made his way out of the living room, across the kitchen and down the stairs. He shifted her in his arms so he could pull the blankets back. Cradling her, he laid her down and pulled the blanket over her. Apollo moved to the other side and crawled in next to her but didn’t slip under the covers. He ran his fingers through her hair waiting for her to settle into a deeper sleep. Once he was sure she would stay asleep without him close to her he kiss her hair and got up out of the bed. He made his way around the room silently using his wand to erase any trace of the nights events from their bedroom. As soon as the room was in it’s former condition he made his way carefully upstairs. He knew the Death Eaters were gone but he still checked every room of the house to make sure. He wanted to be able to confidently tell Adora she was safe in this house. Once the house was clear he made his way out the back door on to the old creaking deck. He scowled it needed a lot of work as well. He walked out into the yard with his wand lit so he could see. He checked every dark corner of the yard and made his way around the entire perimeter of the property. Towards the back of the property line there was a huge empty space between the Avery Manor and the neighboring Manor, which he knew was home to another family of former Death Eaters who too were hiding from those who still carried out acts of evil. He couldn’t see the house, which meant they’d placed protection charms on it like he had on his. He pointed his wand at the grass growing a small sapling tree; he did this two more times, giving each tree enough space between the others to grow very large and tall. He knew someday they’d be big enough for kids to build a giant fort in. He’d show Adora later.

As he was making his way back towards the deck he could see the sun beginning to rise and light up the horizon. Which meant Adora would be waking soon. He carefully cast all the protection charms once more ensuring they were safe before stepping back into the kitchen. He closed the door quietly behind him as he turned to head towards the downstairs bedroom he heard her speak from the floor above, "Apollo, are you there?" She sounded nervous, and worried. He listened as she came down the stairs staying where he stood careful not to make any more noise for fear of scaring her. Once he could see her through the kitchen doorway he stepped forward quietly, “I’m right here.” He whispered, hoping not to startle her too much. He reached her and pulled her into his arms. “I’m sorry; I got up to check the house then went outside to make sure you could feel safe. I didn’t mean to worry you.” He kissed her cheek and ran his hand down her cheek. “Are you alright love?” He searched her eyes for any sign of the previous fear she had earlier, there were traces of it but she seemed to have calmed some. “Come with me, I want to show you something.” He took her hand in his and lead her to the back door and walked towards the back of the property, as they walked he spoke, “I put up a second set of protection charms around the property. I also walked the entire perimeter and I charmed all the gates to only open for you and I.” As they reached the previously empty field Apollo pulled her into the center and pointed out the three saplings. “I also planted those; they should grow into really big trees that would be perfect for a tree house fort. I want to stay in this house with you Adora and eventually have a family with you. But I want you to feel safe here. I will never let anything happen to you. I will never allow myself to go back into that darkness as long as I have you. I am sorry for what I did last night. I did it to protect you; I would be so lost without you Adora. I’d do anything to keep you safe even if it meant giving myself over to the darkness.
